FAQs

Home FAQs
For a long time it was said that mineral light protection was only possible up to SPF 30. How can eco cosmetics offer a mineral-based organic cream with SPF 50?
It took three years of development work to find a way to enable this. Up until then it was only possible to achieve a higher sun protection factor, but at the expense of visual appearance, by using a high proportion of titanium oxide or zinc oxide particles. When applied to the skin it is difficult to spread this composition of cream and it produces a white film.
Eco outwitted the “white washing” effect. The titanium dioxide particles are coated with corundum.
Corundum is a natural mineral declared under the name Alumina (Corundum). In this process titanium dioxide particles are enclosed in purified clay. Intense pressure and heat serve to induce crystallization of the aluminium oxide situated in the clay around these titanium oxide particles. A pigment is created, the centre of which contains white titanium dioxide surrounded by clear corundum (AL203) with darker clay deposits. These pigments have a reflection performance up to five times stronger than that of “normal” titanium dioxide. With high-quality emulsifiers, oils and other ingredients these pigments are “stirred to a cream” during a particularly long mixing time.
The UV-filter complex then coats the skin and offers it safe protection. In this way it was possible to find a cosmetic solution for a mineral-based organic sun cream with a very high sun protection factor.
What do UVA and UVB on the packaging mean?
This was initiated by a recommendation of the EU in 2006. In order to protect the skin from UV-light in a more balanced way sunscreen products should protect not only against UVB rays but in addition also provide defense against long-wave UVA rays. In fact this was to be at a ratio of 1-3 in relation to the UVB-sun protection factor. Therefore for a sun cream with SPF 30 the UVA protection would be 10. All eco sunscreen products meet this recommendation and are allowed to carry the UVA logo.
Is nanotechnology (particles smaller than 100nm) used in eco cosmetics sunscreen products?
No. We categorically do not use nanotechnology!
The World Health Organization has classed nano titanium dioxide as possibly carcinogenic even for humans as well. This assumption is reason enough for us to exclude nano particles from our formulations. Our certifier Ecocert Greenlife has likewise never taken the use of nanotechnology into consideration.
To be on the safe side we have had the size of the pigments used by us measured. They have an average size of 400 nm, which is four times larger than nano particles.
How do the transparent sunscreen products work?
The sun oil spray and sun oil gel SPF 30 offer mineral protection against sunlight with herbal compounds, where titanium dioxide is combined with the special properties of Karanja oil.
Both products are oil-based and contain neither alcohol nor allergens, essential oils or emulsifiers.
Why are your sunscreen products water-resistant although they contain no chemicals?
Water resistance is achieved by means of oils and emulsifiers contained in the products.
Are the sunscreen products bio-degradable and safe for coral reefs?
Yes, the sunscreen products are bio-degradable and pose no danger for reefs, aquatic organisms or waters.
How can sunscreen products be removed from the skin?
The best way to remove sunscreen products from the skin is by using shower gel and a sponge (e.g. with our vegan sponge and After Sun shower gel.)
In case of stains on clothing these can be removed using bile soap or stain remover.
What is the difference between SPF 50 and SPF 50+?
The SPF always refers directly to UVB protection. Therefore SPF 50 means at least a factor of 50.
SPF 50+ means UVB protection is at least a factor of 60.
Why are there sunscreen and care products especially for children?
Very high sun protection factors like 50+ and a fragrance from mild essential oils without allergens are recommended for delicate baby and children´s skin. For this reason we have developed special sunscreen and care products.
Baby & Kids sun cream SPF 50+ or SPF 45? What makes the big difference?
Baby & Kids sun cream SPF 45 offers UVB protection of at least 45.
Baby & Kids sun cream SPF 50+ offers UVB protection of at least 60.
Both products correspond to the EU recommendation. Thus the UVA protection accounts for at least a third of the SPF. Cosmetic titanium dioxide (silicium coating, approximate size 140-170 nm) is used in Baby & Kids sun cream SPF 45. A special UV titanium dioxide (corundum coating, approximate size 400-600 nm) is utilized in the variants with SPF 50+.
Why, according to the INCI list, do the products contain perfume?
Our products partly contain natural essential oils which have to be declared as perfumes in the INCI list. We use no artificial perfumes!
Does Eco use palm oil?
After it became public how much exploitation of nature is practiced for the cultivation of oil palms we took immediate action. We have tested alternatives and transformed our formulations .Since 2013 we have no longer used palm oil. Previously we only used it if there was no other alternative.
Meanwhile for some products we have even been able to achieve improved properties by using coconut, sea buckthorn or sunflower oil or wax.
The description of the mouth wash states that it has no added sweeteners although it contains the sugar substitute sorbitol.
Sorbitol is needed as an active substance carrier. It is a polysaccharide which is of no use for carious bacteria. Therefore it is safe for dental care products.
What is Carvon (in toothpaste)?
Carvon is an extract of caraway.
